Portrush, Northern Ireland (AP) – The question that Scottie Scheffler asked at the beginning of the week could be very well put to those who pursued him in the British Open.

What is the point?

Scheffler provided another example on Saturday at Royal Portrush, why he has dominated Golf in the past three years. He was the only player in the last eight groups who did not make a Bogey on the way to a 4-little 67, which made it possible for him to open a lead with four shifts while he made the third leg of the career grass slam.

But I just have to go out and play a really good round golf and see what happens tomorrow.”

But this championship is now in the hands of Scheffler, who has been more than any other in the world since Tiger Woods. And there was nothing on Saturday when he indicates that he would make it easy if he followed him.

“I'm just trying to perform and not to rethink things,” said Scheffler. “I have the feeling that I was doing the right thing so far and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's challenge.”

Fitzpatrick did his best to keep up, but he missed a 4-foot-saving putt on the 13th, got a bad jump on the 17th, which led to another bogey and landed five shots behind it.

“I just didn't do putts. I didn't hit it close enough,” said Fitzpatrick. “It drove well enough and didn't do it close enough. Just did much fewer putts than scottie.”

Scheffler is combined in the last group with Li, who wrote history at the PGA championship in 2020 when he held the 36-hole leadership and was the first player from China who led in a major. Li did his first bogey in the 13th hole and he dropped another shot on the 18th by driving into a pot of bunker.

The Scottish Open Champion Chris Gotterup had a 68 in its first appearance at the British Open and joined the group with 8th 205, including McIlroy, Harris English (68) and Tyrrell Hatton (68).

This is Scheffler's largest 54-hole lead in a major, with three shots at the PGA championship and three shots on the 2022 Masters.
