The exonerated five are suing Donald Trump in a defamation lawsuit

Their lawsuit stems from the GOP candidate making false comments about the Central Park case during the Sept. 10 presidential debate.

The Exonerated Five, formerly known as the Central Park Five, filed a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump.

The lawsuit stemmed from the Republican candidate making false comments about his case during the Sept. 10 presidential debate. According to the Associated Press, They filed the federal lawsuit on October 21st. You have requested a jury trial to recover damages.

“Defendant Trump falsely stated that plaintiffs had killed a person and pleaded guilty to the crime. “These statements are demonstrably false,” the lawsuit states.

During the debate, Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, mentioned that in the past he had continued to denigrate the proven innocent men in this case. He responded, reinforcing the false narrative surrounding the group. The neighborhood conversation reposted a clip of his words.

“They admitted, they said they pleaded guilty, and I said, ‘Well, if they pleaded guilty, they seriously injured a person, ultimately killed a person… And they pleaded guilty, then they did pleaded not guilty,” Trump said.

At the time of the 1989 incident in which a white woman was raped and assaulted while jogging through Central Park, Trump purchased a full-page newspaper ad calling for the reinstatement of the death penalty. Many thought the advertisement referred to the execution of the then-teenagers. Past and present opponents believed the act had racist motives.

In his latest words, Trump continued to suggest that the men bear some blame in the case. Given his infamous connection to their case, Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise have decided to take legal action against the former president over his damaging words about them. Remarkably, Trump has never apologized for the news promotion either.

Trump’s team deemed the lawsuit “frivolous” and consistent with his allegations of election interference.

A Trump spokesman called it “just another frivolous election interference lawsuit filed by desperate left-wing activists to distract the American people from Kamala Harris’ dangerously liberal agenda and her failed campaign.”

As adults, the Exonerated Five campaigned for Harris throughout the election. One member, Salaam, is also a New York City Councilman. As they seek justice for Trump’s words, they continue their campaign to rally support for Harris.
