KC Streetcar will resume operations early after the work is completed

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The KC Streetcar resumed service Tuesday after suspending service Sept. 30 to complete connection work for the Main Street extension.

During construction, which lasted approximately three weeks, crews completed work to connect the current downtown route to the Main Street Extension, the 3.5-mile extension south of the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

“We are excited to be back in operation and moving Kansas City closer to the future of mass transit with the Main Street Extension,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority. “We appreciate the community’s patience during the temporary suspension of light rail and are committed to continuing to serve the downtown area as we make progress on this significant expansion.”

According to KC Streetcar, in addition to connecting the routes, the teams also carried out the following work.

  • Demolition and removal of existing track switches and track slabs.
  • Removal of existing intersection north of Pershing Road.
  • Replacement of expansion joints on Main Street Viaduct.
  • Welding the rails and building the final north and southbound tracks needed in the area.
  • Renovation of the Main Street Viaduct bridge deck.
  • Construction of a northbound Union Station stop.
  • Installation of OCS masts and overhead lines.
  • The roadway was paved and paved and new traffic control signage was installed.
