A man is in custody Tuesday after a shooting incident that began in Minneapolis and ended with one dead and another injured west of the Twin Cities.

Police arrested the man on a number of charges, including murder, after he allegedly fired a gun from a balcony in Minneapolis, fled from police and shot a person in Kandiyohi County.

Around 12:30 p.m., Minneapolis police responded to a report that a person was shooting from the balcony of an Uptown apartment building.

At least two people were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, including the suspect’s ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend. According to police, the two people and the suspect got into an argument and shots were fired. No one was injured in this incident.

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the shooter and his ex-girlfriend have a child together. That information prompted law enforcement to respond to the daycare center in the 5th District, Chief O’Hara said.

The daycare center was sealed off and the child was safely taken home to a relative.

Law enforcement eventually contacted the suspect by phone and crisis negotiators spoke with him for “a period of time.” However, officers later learned that the suspect was no longer at his home and was traveling outside of the Twin Cities.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday evening that the suspect traveled west through several counties before shooting and wounding a man at a rural home in Kandiyohi County.

The suspect was then pursued to the Highway 71/23 bypass southeast of Willmar, where he “attempted carjacking” before fatally shooting the driver, according to police.

The identity of this victim has not yet been revealed.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect was ultimately booked into the Kandiyohi County Jail on multiple charges, including murder.

“Several lives were put in danger today, with unfortunately one person losing their life,” said Imran Ali, spokesman for the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family. Please keep the victims, their families and our first responders in your prayers today.”

Minneapolis officers later executed a search warrant at the residence and confirmed there were no other victims in the unit.

“After he left Minneapolis, crime and tragedy appeared to occur outside of the city – namely in the western counties,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

“I know our officers did absolutely everything they could, but it appears that this individual was murderous and only intent on committing violence,” O’Hara added.

During the investigation, Minneapolis police cordoned off several blocks of Lyndale Avenue in Uptown – at least from Lake Street to West 28th Street – while they searched the apartment building.

During the press conference, O’Hara added: “I have no information that suggests there has been a history of domestic violence between these two individuals; However, I would like to remind the community that if people find themselves in a situation that may be aggravated by heated passion or something to do with a relationship, if they wish, they can take precautions and have the police come over and will help.”
