Armed police officers should be given more protection from prosecution following the Chris Kaba verdict, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has said.

Sir Mark has called for new exemptions from criminal charges for firearms officers involved in fatal shootings after Sergeant Martyn Blake was acquitted of murdering Kaba during a vehicle stop in 2022.

Mr Blake was acquitted by a jury at the Old Bailey on Monday. The family of Mr Kaba, who turned out to be a gang member and carried out a nightclub shooting days before his death, said the verdict showed that “our lives are not valued by the system”.

Mr Kaba, 24, was shot dead by firearms officer Martyn Blake on September 5, 2022, after attempting to flee a police chase in an Audi Q8.

Journalists wanted to tell the full facts behind the fatal shooting of the rapper and gang member – including his violent past – but were prevented from doing so by a series of reporting restrictions during the Old Bailey trial in central London.

The restrictions were lifted on Tuesday after Blake was found not guilty of murdering Mr Kaba, despite claims he shot him “without justification” to prevent his escape.
