Potsdam. Both weddings and divorces are declining in Berlin and Brandenburg. With 11,429 marriages, a historic low was reached in Berlin in 2023, the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office announced on Wednesday in Potsdam. There was a 7.4 percent disadvantage compared to the previous year. 11,895 marriages were concluded in Brandenburg, 9.7 percent fewer than in 2022.

At the same time, according to the information, 5,388 marriages were divorced in Berlin in 2023, 7.9 percent fewer than in the previous year. It was said that this was the lowest value for Berlin in the past five years. In Brandenburg, 3,802 marriages were divorced last year, 6.2 percent fewer than in 2022. The number of divorces in Brandenburg has thus reached its lowest level in 30 years. Of the divorced couples in Berlin, 6.8 percent had applied for divorce together, in Brandenburg only 2.5 percent.

According to the information, a decline in marriages of 21.7 percent was recorded in Berlin from 2019 to 2023. In Brandenburg there were 16.3 percent fewer weddings in the same period. The number of divorces fell by 8.6 percent in Berlin and by 14.1 percent in Brandenburg.

The general risk of marriages and divorces was briefly interrupted in 2021 and 2022, it said. At least in terms of marriages, a catch-up effect is expected with the increase in 2022, as the first restrictions in private spaces were no longer applicable due to the corona pandemic.
