Here’s how to watch Mondaire Jones and Mike Lawler debate for New York’s 17th Congressional District

NEW YORK – Mondaire Jones and Mike Lawler are in a highly anticipated race New York’s 17th congressional districtwhich represents all of Rockland and Putnam counties as well as parts of Westchester and Dutchess.

CBS News New York will host a live debate between the candidates Wednesday evening in New York City.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch.

New York’s 17th District covers the suburban area north of New York City and the race could play a key role in which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives for the next two years.

In 2022, Lawler narrowly defeated U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloneya Democrat who had been in office for a decade.

Now Lawler, a Republican, faces a challenge from Jones. which represented much of the district until 2022 when he moved to Brooklyn to avoid a primary contest with another incumbent affected by the redistribution.

Both candidates have focused their campaigns on attracting moderate voters, but criticize each other as radical.

What time does the debate start?

The debate begins at 8:00 p.m. EST, lasts one hour, and ends at 9:00 p.m

New York voters only have a few days left Register to vote in the November 5 general electionand the early voting period begins this Saturday, October 26th.

What are the rules for the debate?

How will the debate go? Here are the rules that each candidate agreed to.

Candidates have one minute to answer a question. Rebuttals are permitted if justified.

There will be no opening statement. A quick question and answer session rounds off the hour.

There will be no live audience.

Meet the debate moderators

The debate will be moderated by veteran CBS News New York anchor Maurice DuBois and political reporter Marcia Kramer.

DuBois joined CBS in 2004 and is co-anchor of CBS News New York at 5 and 11. Over his 20-year career with the company, he has covered everything from local news to national political conventions and moderated past debates Governor of New York, Mayor of New York City and congressional races.

Kramer joined the newsroom in 1990 as a political and investigative reporter, uncovering things like improper use of lights and sirens, people stealing school supplies and selling them on the black market, schools serving food past its sell-by date, and school board members who are in Take a vacation to Vegas with tax money.

Where is the debate taking place?

The debate takes place in CBS Broadcast Center on 57th Street in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. It’s also where the Vice presidential debate between candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz took place earlier this month.

The CBS Broadcast Center is home to CBS News New York, CBS News 24/7, CBS Sports and Sports Network and several other productions. It is also the distribution center of the CBS Television Network.

CBS acquired the building in 1952 from Sheffield Farms, which was then the largest milk distribution center in the world. Milk was bottled here and distributed by train. There are still tracks in the basement today.

CBS News then moved into the building in 1964, moving from the Grand Central Terminal building. Walter Cronkite broadcast the 1964 election results from Studio 41, now the site of The Drew Barrymore Show.
