Reformed PA criminal killed while riding bike without helmet: coroner

Dwain S. Englert Sr., 58, of Allentown was riding a bicycle along Pembroke Road at the intersection of Livingston Street in Freemansburg Borough when he was struck by a vehicle, the Northampton County coroner’s office said.

Englert had a criminal past that he wanted to put behind him, according to an interview with the Reading eagle in August 2021. He claimed that his troubles with the law were due to his bad temper, which was exacerbated by drug and alcohol abuse.

A few months after his interview with the Reading Eagle, Englert was arrested after assaulting his live-in girlfriend, as reported by The morning call States. He threatened to kill her with a hunting knife, leading to a three-hour manhunt after police were called.

One of the officers found Englert hiding in the woods and took him into custody after chasing him for about 200 yards, police told The Morning Call. He was arrested on November 11, 2021 and charged with simple assault, terroristic threats, harassment, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and weapons violations.

According to the medical examiner’s office, Englert was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He was taken to Saint Luke’s Hospital on the Anderson Campus, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death was “multiple blunt force injuries,” Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek said in a news release. The manner of death was “accidental.”

It was not clear from the press release whether this crash was a hit-and-run or not. Daily Voice contacted both the Freemansburg Police Department and the Northampton County Coroner’s Office for clarification. At the time of publication, neither agency had responded.

Details about Englert’s life outside of his criminal history were not immediately available. His family is invited to share this information with the Daily Voice by emailing mmoyer@dailyvoice.com.
