Fatal shooting in Scottsburg under investigation

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) investigators are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in Scottsburg.

On October 21, 2024, at approximately 12:00 p.m., DCSO tells us officers responded to a report of criminal mischief and assault in the 5000 block of Lutsinger Creek Road.

As officers responded, emergency dispatchers received additional calls from residents in the area reporting that the incident was escalating and reports of gunshots were being heard.

Upon arrival, DCSO told us officers found 58-year-old Darrel Dow Dodd unconscious and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.

DCSO and Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office detectives responded to the scene.

As part of the investigation, Douglas County investigators report that Dodd was armed with a gun, broke into a home and began attacking and strangling a woman he knew while threatening to stab her.

Another person attempted to intervene, but Dodd continued his attack. “Dodd was shot twice by a third person,” DCSO tells us.

DCSO investigators are currently investigating the incident in light of the legitimate defense of another individual and the case is ongoing. We will provide you with further details as we receive them.
