Baby dies in house fire in Kentucky, toddler suffers severe burns

TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. (WSMV) – A house fire is under investigation in Monroe County Monday afternoon after an 8-month-old child died and a 2-year-old child suffered severe burns, according to Kentucky State Police.

Officers responded to a call about a house fire near Tompkinsville around 1 p.m.

The fire occurred on West 6th Street and multiple emergency services responded to the incident. Preliminary investigation revealed that 25-year-old Ashton Wright was sleeping and when she woke up her house was full of smoke.

Wright’s two children, 8 months old and 2 years old, were also in the home. With the help of a neighbor, the mother managed to get one of her children out of the house, but they were unable to reach her other child.

KSP reports that firefighters entered the home and found the 8-month-old baby dead. Meanwhile, the toddler was taken to a local hospital for treatment of severe burns.

“The cause of the fire is believed to have been an electric space heater in the apartment, however the incident remains under investigation,” KSP said.
