Game Day Notes (Boys, Class 1A)

The big question heading into the boys Class 1A tournament this year was: Can anyone beat Bentworth?

The Bearcats (16-0, 8-0 in the section) steamrolled through the regular season, looking for back-to-back WPIAL titles with a roster loaded with postseason experience from last year as they beat their Mon Valley counterparts /Washington County defeated , Charleroi, in the WPIAL final and also made it to the PIAA semifinal round. Upperclassmen leading the way for Bentworth include brothers Adam Moessner and Ryan Moessner and Andrew Vipperman. The Bearcats have outscored their opponents by a whopping 1,117-4 this season.

So far, they’ve started Saturday’s playoffs without much of a challenge, beating California 11-0. Now the road is likely to get more difficult as they face a Trinity Christian team that was on the front foot and had little trouble defeating Beth-Center 3-0 in their first round win. He scored two goals within the first five minutes of the game.

In other games, Springdale will face Sewickley Academy’s 2-1 Dynamos in the first round, while the Chargers beat Freedom 1-0 in overtime.

Another section winner is No. 4 Beaver County Christian (14-3), which defeated Riverview 2-0 on Saturday and will now face upset No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic, while the No. 5 Centurions Aquinas upset Academy, 2-1, on Jackson Vacanti’s golden goal in overtime.

No. 2 Winchester Thurston (13-2-1) head coach Adam Brownold told PSN in August his team will go “wherever the bus takes us.” Well, it looks like Winchester Thurston will be hoping to make it across the eastern suburbs to Highmark Stadium as they defeated Serra Catholic 9-0 at UPMC’s Graham Field and will now host Eden Christian at Penn Hills Middle School Football-specific field that should be used for more WPIAL playoff games. Winchester Thurston has not lost against teams from higher classifications since its first appearance of the season and closed the season with back-to-back shutout victories against its closest section rivals, Trinity Christian and Springdale, to secure another section title. With a team that includes upperclassmen who were part of two WPIAL title teams in 2021 and 2022, the Bears are led by Riverhounds Academy product Michael Miller, who is usually impossible to miss on the field as he is one of the Able to be a dangerous presence in the air on set-pieces and box-to-box coverage, the WPIAL player has demonstrated his versatility as both a midfielder and defender in high school competition. Eden Christian has been knocking on the door in recent years and came very close to the WPIAL finals in 2021, but was then relegated in dramatic fashion by Greensburg Central Catholic. The Warriors (9-6-2) needed overtime to defeat Carlynton 2-1 in a hard-fought battle on Saturday.
