Langlade is one of several Wisconsin counties hitting record-breaking unemployment

(WSAW) – Nine counties across the state, including Langlade and several other northern Wisconsin counties, recorded their lowest unemployment rates on record.

According to the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), counties with record low unemployment include Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Door, Langlade, Oconto, Pepin, Rock and Sawyer, with the unemployment rate at just 1.9 percent and no higher 2.7 percent in these selected districts.

Last week the DWD announced a new employment record for September. This is the fifth consecutive monthly record for state employment and underscores the unprecedented number of workers involved in Wisconsin’s economy.

“Record-breaking unemployment in nine counties, including eight predominantly rural northern counties, is no small matter and certainly no coincidence,” said Governor Evers. “These record-breaking numbers represent real working families, businesses and communities across our state and are a testament to the hardworking people of our state, our innovative industries and our efforts to break down barriers at work so people can thrive and thrive in the country workers, such as access to job training, child care, transportation, housing and more.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has released employment and unemployment statistics estimates for Wisconsin metropolitan areas, cities and counties for September. According to the DWD, preliminary employment estimates showed Wisconsin’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 2.9 percent, which is 1.2 percentage points lower than the national unemployment rate. Additionally, the state’s labor force participation rate rose to 65.6 percent in September, while the statewide rate remained at 62.7 percent.

The state continues to see a historically high number of non-farm jobs, increasing by 30,800 to 3,044,800 jobs during the year.

“All areas of Wisconsin and all sectors of our economy – agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and more – benefit from connecting employers with a skilled workforce and leveling the playing field for success,” said DWD Secretary Amy Pechacek.

According to the BLS, counties’ record-low unemployment rates in September 2024 include:
