University police warn of fraud involving demands for money and the threat of arrest

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The University Police Southern Command says there is an ongoing scam where the caller is impersonating the police department.

The caller claims to be from the university police. They may say that the victim or a family member has an outstanding warrant for their arrest, or that there are problems with the police.

The suspect then demands money or threatens arrest.

University police say this call is a scam. The department will not contact anyone seeking payment to drop charges or dismiss a warrant.

For those who receive such a call, police recommend coming forward immediately and calling the department directly to confirm the call.

University Police say those who receive a questionable call should do the following:

  • Don’t give in to the pressure to take immediate action.
  • Do not engage in conversations as scammers may record your response.
  • Do not give a caller your credit card number, bank account information, Social Security number or other personal information.
  • Do not send money if a caller asks you to transfer money or pay with a prepaid debit card or transfer money to a Bitcoin account.
  • Do not travel to a location that the caller has asked you to go to.
