Charges filed in weekend shooting in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Missouri (KMIZ)

A Columbia man has been charged with six felonies after a shooting Sunday night left a man with life-threatening injuries.

Tavion R. Johnson, 19, was charged Wednesday with two counts of first-degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon following a shooting that occurred Sunday evening in the area of Clark Lane and Ria Street.

The subsequent investigation led to police closing a portion of Clark Lane.

A woman called police late Sunday and said her mobile home had been shot at and officers found multiple bullet holes and bullet casings, a probable cause statement said. Police found a man wounded by gunfire, cars hit by bullets and shell casings from several weapons, the statement said.

The statement said one person admitted to firing a weapon after being shot at from another residence. Johnson was identified as one of the shooters. According to the documents, investigators used Instagram videos that showed Johnson waving guns at the crime scene before the shooting to support the identification.

Police also found evidence that could disprove Johnson’s alibi, the statement said. The statement suggests the shooting may have been part of an ongoing dispute between Johnson and another person.

Columbia police said Sunday that a man suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound, but did not provide further information about his condition.

Johnson was in the Boone County Jail, but no booking photo was available early Wednesday afternoon.
