In an interview with Chile’s Sonar FM: Portnoy was asked if he missed playing DREAM THEATER during his time outside the group. He replied: “Of course I was always missing.” DREAM THEATER and the music and the boys and the fans. Not all DREAM THEATER The fans accompanied me and all my other bands. So I would go on tour every time SONS OF APOLLO or WINERY DOGS or Shattered fortress or NEAL MORSE TAPEI would see someDREAM THEATER Fans, but there is a large part of the fan base wasn’t with me all these years. So yeah, I missed them and I missed the boys and I missed the music. We have always been a family first and foremost.

Regarding the fact that he is once again responsible for creating the setlists DREAM THEATER‘s live shows, microphone said: “Yes, it is an area that has always been my department and my passion. I always wrote all the setlists for it.” DREAM THEATERas well as any of my bands or projects. This is an area that is very important to me. And yes, when I came back DREAM THEATERIn many things we have to figure out who will be responsible for what. There are many areas that I used to be responsible for and that I am responsible for now John [Petrucci, DREAM THEATER guitarist] maybe do, or maybe the band makes band decisions. So now I have to somehow find my place in the chemistry of the band. But yeah, one of the things they gave back to me was the setlist and writing the setlist. So yeah, it was a lot of fun and exciting – really a great open palette to work with. 40 years of music, and I haven’t played any of this music with the boys in almost 15 years. That’s the way it is all so fresh. I may have been bored in 2010, but now in 2024, I’m just as excited to play these songs any from them.”

On the subject of how different it is to play with DREAM THEATER in 2024 compared to 14 years ago, microphone said: “There are two sides to this question. The first thing I would like to say personally is that we are all simply older and wiser and gentler. I’m not as much of a control freak as I used to be; I’m much more relaxed, much more gentle. So there’s one side of everyone’s natural age – we’re in our fifties and sixties now, and I think we’re just more mature and more experienced. The other side of this question, as I just mentioned, is my place in this new one Find chemistry and monitor each area. And when I left the band, they had to divide some of those areas between themselves and others have people overseeing different areas. And now that I’m coming back, I have to be very respectful that they’ve spent 13 years without me and maybe do things a certain way now. It’s up to me to be really very respectful of it and not try to force myself into it any of the areas. So when something comes up, whether we’re talking about a set list or the merch or how they’re going to record in the studio, no matter what the topic is, it’s always like, “Okay, how do you do that?” Now ? How should I be included? Should I supervise it? Should I stay out of it? That’s fine too.’ And it’s kind of a learning process to get comfortable with the way the band works now.”

Portnoy Recently she said “So…do you want to be a musician?” Podcast about his attitude when returning to work DREAM THEATER: “It became clear to us at our age when we decided to reunite and get back together. I would be lying if I didn’t say that we don’t start looking in the mirror and looking at the clock and saying, ‘Who knows how.’ How much time do we have left? The clock is ticking and we realize we won’t be here forever. And we want to spend the time we have left together with the people we grew up with and love. So, yeah, that’s about where we’re at right now.

Portnoy admitted to Mariskal Rock that he “had to get used to being the ‘new guy'” upon his return. DREAM THEATER“being the new guy in a band I co-founded as a teenager. So it’s kind of a transition for me to go from being just the leader like I was when I left the band to now.” “I have to kind of get back into the chemistry and I have to respect the fact that “They’ve been doing this for 13 years without me and that maybe they have new ways of doing things, new ways of making decisions,” he explained. “So… I had to show a lot of respect for my role as the new guy and find my way back into the chemistry of the band.”

DREAM THEATER will release his sixteenth studio album, “parasomnia”on February 7, 2025 InsideOut Music. The LP marks the band’s first release Portnoy since 2009 “Black clouds and silver linings on the horizon”.

“parasomnia” was produced by the guitarist John Petruccideveloped by James “Jimmy T” Meslinand mixed by Andy Snape. Hugh Syme returns once again to lend his creative vision to the cover.
