15-year-old girl hospitalized after shooting near Norman elementary school

An investigation is underway after a teenager was shot dead near a Norman primary school.

The Norman Police Department (NPD) responded to the shooting at approximately 7:27 p.m. Tuesday in the 1600 block of 24th Avenue SE.

Upon arrival, officers found a 15-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound.

According to police, the girl was taken to a hospital where she continues to be treated as an inpatient. The injuries sustained do not appear to be life-threatening.

Investigators said initial reports indicate the suspect is a 15-year-old boy who made contact with the victim behind the elementary school.

An altercation reportedly ensued between the boy and girl before the suspect brandished a gun and shot the victim before fleeing the area.

The suspect was later found at home in the 800 block of Lexington Street. Officials said the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

He was booked into Couch Juvenile Detention Center on charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

While the incident occurred in the area behind the elementary school, no school staff or students were involved or present during the incident. – Norman Police Department

The incident remains under investigation by the NPD Criminal Investigation Division.
