Men’s soccer drops midweek MAAC game against Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist men’s soccer team was eliminated from MAAC play against the Iona Gaels on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Foxes lost 1-0 to the Gaels in midweek play and were 2-2 in MAAC play.

Arion Ulaj led the Red Foxes with two shots on goal in the game. The Red Foxes moved to 5-7 overall in the 2024 season.

The Red Foxes currently sit sixth in the MAAC standings as eight teams make the playoffs for the 2024 season.

 

  • “The boys fought hard and earned something from the game. Even though we lost a man, we created chances and kept the pressure on. The gap between two good teams is so small and unfortunately we were on the wrong side this afternoon. This is what we have to do.” Keep working and we will find the results.   • Jamie Lowell The game began with a fourth-minute save for the Red Foxes, which kept Iona off the scoreboard for the first few minutes of the game.
  • A defensive game between the Red Foxes and Gaels would resume midway through the first half. The Red Foxes attempted three shots in the first 25 minutes of the game but remained goalless.
  • Iona broke through the defense with the first goal of the game in the 30th minuteTh Minute, scored by Alvaro Manerio. The Red Foxes trailed Iona 1-0 at the end of the first half.

    • Iona outscored the Red Foxes 7-6 in the first half and outscored the Red Foxes in shots on goal, 3-0.
    • Jamie Lowell recorded two saves and allowed the Red Foxes a goal in the first half.
    • The Red Foxes won more corners than Iona in the first half, namely three, Iona two.

  • In the 60thTh minute of the game, Arion Ulaj recorded the Red Foxes’ first shot on goal in the game against the Gaels. The shot was parried by Iona’s goalkeeper and so the lead remained.
  • The Red Foxes continued their offensive attack in the 64th minuteTh minute of the game.

    • Skyler Cunha recorded the Red Foxes’ second shot on goal, which was saved by Iona.
    • Ulaj followed with his second shot on goal of the game, which was also saved by Iona’s goalkeeper.

  • The Red Foxes’ final offensive push in the final 20 minutes failed as the Red Foxes lost their game against Iona 0-1.

  • The Red Foxes outscored the Gaels 15-12 in that game.
  • The Red Foxes and Gaels tied the game with four shots on goal each.
  • Arion Ulaj led the Red Foxes with two shots on goal in the game.
