St. Paul’s Church was officially abandoned after a devastating fire

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – After a devastating fire broke out at a church on Broadway in downtown Louisville, Metro government has declared the building “legally abandoned” and will take measures to prevent anyone from entering.

A letter posted outside the German Evangelical Paulskirche said the property was classified as abandoned after a comprehensive inspection. It also said the church, which remains accessible, poses a fire risk, so crews plan to board it up.

On October 9, a three-alarm fire burned through the church and caused Broadway to remain closed for nearly 24 hours. Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles from the highway.

A week later, Louisville Fire urged neighbors to remain vigilant for fires in vacant buildings.

The city said St. Paul’s was used as a homeless camp. Metro Codes and Regulations officials said they have had trouble contacting the owners, who are based out of state.

The fire remains under investigation and a “No Trespassing” sign will be posted outside.
