Children should never go out alone on Halloween: Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. When older children are mature enough to be outside, they should stay in well-lit places and go trick-or-treating in groups.

Stay visible and safe: Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and choose bright costumes. Costumes should be properly sized to avoid tripping or falls and tested for flammability. Try using face paint and makeup instead of masks. Masks can impair vision. It’s always a good idea to have glow sticks and flashlights for better visibility.

Cross streets safely: When trick-or-treating, cross streets at intersections, look left and right, and stay away from electronic devices. Watch out for cars and never run into the street.

Don’t drive like a ghoul: Be especially alert for pedestrians during popular trick-or-treating hours, usually 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Drive slower and be alert in residential areas.

Check treats: Remind children not to eat their treats until they are home and checked for safety and tampering. Always check your child’s candy to make sure it hasn’t been opened and there are no foreign objects.

Prescott Valley Police emphasize the importance of safety during Halloween celebrations. Public safety is a shared responsibility and any suspicious activity should be reported.
