Sometimes transitional spaces offer the best opportunities for design wows. Just ask Loudermilk JordanZeke Loudermilk and Chappell Jordan, who received the staircase and upper gallery redesign at the 2024 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas.

Although this space is more functional than many others in the house, the team wanted to create a captivating moment that would draw guests upstairs from the start. The first step was working with Gracie blowing up an eggplant poppy-filled wall panel that was unlike anything the brand had done before.

“We love London members’ clubs or Fifth Avenue hotels that are essentially old-fashioned spaces but have a new world feel,” says Loudermilk. “We started with this old-fashioned idea of things, using established companies like Gracie and Stark, then giving them our Loudermilk Jordan twist with a more modern take on traditional design.”

The large-format wallpaper alone will have enough impact to attract visitors as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the poppies The Wizard of Oz. And the collection of furniture, lighting, and artwork upstairs is sure to keep guests lingering once they get upstairs. The couple drew on Texas design talent and selected furniture from MOUS And M. Naevewhile the floor lamp, coffee table, sideboard and mirror were all selected Studio Van Den Akker.

The duo also collaborated CoCollect using a contemporary work of art as a living foil for wall covering and landing on a chandelier made of leaves Old antiques. The ornate bar of Casci decorative plaster provides an “old world meets new” atmosphere, while curtains from The Shade Store ensure the gallery has its own shining moment after visitors walk up the stairs.

“Our design is heavily rooted in historical elements, but we wanted more modern, contemporary furniture to add to the mix and bring lots of layers and color,” says Jordan. “We didn’t want the wallpaper to be the only splash of color. We really wanted to have fun with it, add a lot of visual interest while balancing the space.”
