MIAMI BEACH, Fla — Surveillance footage played in court Wednesday captured the moments police said a 19-year-old man attacked his mother’s gynecologist more than a week ago.

Ventura Del Castillo Perez appeared before a judge for a detention hearing and faced assault charges in connection with the incident.

During the hearing, the victim’s son showed the jury photos of his father’s injuries, detailing the extent of the damage caused.

The attack occurred on October 14 at Steven Silvers’ office at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

Carolina Perez, the doctor’s patient and the defendant’s mother, testified that she was unhappy after a June visit during which Silvers prescribed opioids. She expressed concern about narcotics and referenced her siblings’ struggles with drug addiction.

“I can’t have that,” she told the judge.

Perez said she informed her son about the incident, but police said he went to Mount Sinai to confront Silvers without her knowledge.

Body-worn camera footage shows him explaining the confrontation to investigators and details witness accounts of the altercation.

One witness reported hearing the attacker say: “You are not a good doctor. You treat your patients badly,” to which Silvers replied, “You’re just a kid.”

A Miami Beach Police Department investigator described the alarming condition they found the doctor in, saying, “He was unconscious on the ground and not breathing.”

According to the report, Silvers, who became unconscious during the attack, told police he didn’t remember what happened and didn’t even remember coming to work that day. He said the last thing he remembered was someone talking to him about his Yelp reviews.

A prosecutor asked the doctor last week if he was afraid of Del Castillo Perez, to which he replied: “Absolutely.”

“Did you ever meet the defendant before this date?” asked Glazer.

“No,” Silvers replied. “Apparently I was looking after his mother about a month ago. I’m telling you that he was pacing in the hallway waiting for me. And I know this because I had an international patient who was waiting in the lobby area by the elevators and told my staff afterwards that she was very nervous. She saw this person walking up and down the halls before I arrived and when all this happened she actually didn’t even know who I was until she went to her office appointment at 9am and realized I was the doctor, who was supposed to heal her.”

Silvers described his injuries to the judge last week, saying he suffered a concussion, a hematoma on the right side of his head, a swollen collarbone, a temple contusion, a bruised right eye, a brain contusion and two broken ribs.

Body camera footage obtained by Local 10 News showed the teen telling investigators that he did not mean to harm Silvers and that his actions were motivated by anger over his mother’s treatment. However, witnesses said they saw the teenager hit the doctor several times, resulting in serious injuries.

Perez Del Castillo’s lawyer argued during the hearing that the young man did not intend for the situation to become violent.

The defense emphasized that Perez Del Castillo went to the hospital to express concerns about his mother’s care, not to attack the doctor. The lawyer claimed the teenager acted out of emotion and that the physical altercation was not premeditated.

Despite the defense’s arguments, the judge remained unconvinced. After reviewing surveillance footage, the judge called the attack “brutal” and said that even though Perez Del Castillo’s motives were rooted in concern for his mother, the level of violence could not be overlooked.

Judge denies bail, keeps teen in custody

Ultimately, the judge granted the state’s request to hold Perez Del Castillo without bail, concluding that the risk posed by the defendant outweighed the defense’s arguments for release.

However, the judge left open the possibility for the defense to file another bail application at a later date, allowing for the possibility of bail or house arrest if the defense can provide additional evidence.

Perez Del Castillo will remain behind bars for now as his case progresses. His legal team is expected to consider further options for his release as they prepare for trial.
