In the documentary, David and Connie Seawater, who knew the crimes’ main suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen, shed new light on the question of whether the man police always suspected was really the serial killer who sent taunting ciphers to reporters for years and More people threatened to be killed if the news wasn’t published on the front page of San Francisco newspapers.

The Zodiac Killer murdered at least five victims between December 1968 and October 1969, and two people escaped him. The serial killer was suspected of killing up to 28 people, at one point claiming the number of victims had risen to as many as 37. However, despite the fact that police officially named Allen as a suspect, they never had enough evidence to charge him with the crimes.

Allen died of a heart attack in 1992, but the Zodiac Killer case remains open in the hopes that enough evidence will eventually be found to conclusively determine who committed the murders and whether additional murders can be attributed to the serial killer.

Was Arthur Leigh Allen the Zodiac Killer?

The Seawater children say Arthur Leigh Allen confessed

Perhaps the biggest reveal in the Netflix documentary This is the zodiac speaking comes through the Seawater siblings, who say that Leigh Allen confessed to them that he was the Zodiac Killer. David and Connie Seawater also claim that Leigh Allen drugged them as children and may have even taken them to the murders.

According to both of them, Allen, who was like a father to them, often took them on weekend trips, to the movies and even seashell hunting. The two believe he committed murders during these trips, including murderers who were never officially linked to the Zodiac Killer.

Connie Seawater said that in 1991 she went sailing with Allen and asked him if he was actually the Zodiac Killer, to which Allen replied that if he told her he would have to kill her. However, David Seawater admits he got a full confession from Allen – who he spoke to when his health was already deteriorating. In the documentary, David Seawater reveals that Allen not only admitted to being the Zodiac Killer, but also drugged them as children and abused his sister Connie.

Arthur Leigh Allen took the Seawater children to all the murder sites

After watching the 2007 film ZodiacStarring San Francisco Chronicle contributors Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. and Detective Mark Ruffalo, the Seawater children realized they had been the Zodiac Killer at all the murder scenes before the murders. “A lot of this film felt incredibly familiar,” says Connie Seawater This is the zodiac speaking.

In the documentary, Connie Seawater also recalls Allen taking her to a race track in Riverside on October 28, 1966. She believes they were drugged there and only clearly remembers being led back to the car on October 31st. On October 30, a woman named Cheri Jo Bates was found dead on the grounds of Riverside City College. No connection was ever made between her murder and the Zodiac Killer.

The killings stopped while Allen was in prison

People who believe Arthur Leigh Allen was the Zodiac Killer also point to a key piece of circumstantial evidence that appears to support the theory that he was, in fact, the infamous serial killer. Allen was arrested for child molestation in 1974 and subsequently spent three years in prison. During this time, the murders and the letters the killer sent to reporters stopped completely.

He was identified in the police presence

One of the Zodiac Killer’s survivors, Michael Mageau, identified Allen from a photo. However, the contradictory statements from other witnesses meant that police could never use this to charge him with the crime.

The police found a suspicious watch in his house

After Allen’s death, police searched his house and discovered, among other things, his watch, a Zodiac Sea Wolf wristwatch, which had the same logo on the letters, and which was found at one of the crime scenes.
