ABILENE – The ACU men’s and women’s tennis programs are pleased to host the Western Athletic Conference’s first fall invitational tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the John TL Jones Tennis Complex.

The coach of each WAC program selected two singles players and one doubles team per gender to compete in the tournament, which is free for fans to attend. Participants were seeded according to their World Tennis Number and ITA ranking.

“It’s going to be a weekend of great tennis,” said ACU men’s tennis head coach Juan Nunez. “Hopefully we can get a lot of support from our local fans.”

The Wildcats are second in men’s singles Daniel Morozov and the 2024 WAC Freshman of the Year Martin Delnidowho is ranked 8th. Both players will play their quarterfinal games on Friday at 9 a.m

“Danny has been a consistent first or second place player for basically four years. That’s his comfort zone,” Nunez said. “Martin has made great progress. Last year we saw what he was capable of. This semester he was able to build on last semester and continued to grow.”

The ACU men’s doubles team consists of Morozov and Ethan Scribner. The pair earned the No. 1 spot and will play UT Arlington at 9 a.m. Saturday

“I played against them in a tournament in Beaumont last year and they beat everyone else in that tournament,” Nunez said. “They bring a lot of energy, are aggressive and really enjoy playing tennis. Ethan has greatly improved his serve and overall consistency.”

ACU Head Coach of Women’s Tennis Bryan Rainwater has selected juniors Masha Vrsalovic And Olivia Sears to compete in the individual competition.

“This was the best semester for both of them,” Rainwater said. “They did excellently. The training sessions were very energetic. Most importantly, they are really prepared for this tournament. It will be up to them to get rid of their nerves and play their best tennis.”

The women’s singles quarterfinals begin on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Sears is seeded No. 4 and will receive a bye into the quarterfinals, which begin Friday at 3 p.m

Vrsalovic joins us for the women’s doubles Alice Klinteby.

“I think they are two of our best doubles teams. I wanted to put together a couple that could be aggressive. I think.” [the draw] is wide open.

ACU is the 4th seed and plays its first round game on Friday at 12 p.m

The semi-finals of all divisions will take place on Saturday. The men’s and women’s doubles championship matches will take place on Sunday at 9 a.m., with the singles championships following at 12 p.m.

The winners of each drawing advance to the ITA Conference Masters November 7-10 in Rome, Georgia. From a field of 32 singles players and 32 doubles teams per gender, four players qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists). Three doubles teams qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship (champion, finalist and third place).

The NCAA singles and doubles championships will be held Nov. 19-24 at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.

The WAC offers four men’s tennis programs – ACU, Grand Canyon, Seattle U and UTA – and six women’s programs – ACU, Tarleton, Grand Canyon, Seattle U, Utah Tech and UTA.
