New Jersey angler breaks Rhode Island tautog record with catch of 22 pounds

A New Jersey fisherman made history with a record catch in Newport earlier this week. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced Wednesday that Vincent Simms of New Jersey made a massive tautog on October 21, 2024, setting a new state record for the species.

Simms’ tautog weighed 22 pounds, 5.28 ounces, was 33 inches long and had a circumference of 24.25 inches. The catch was certified by Quaker Lane Bait and Tackle, an official weigh station for state records.

Anglers who believe they have caught a record fish can have their catch inspected at any certified weigh station in Rhode Island. For detailed information on fishing records and weigh stations, visit the Rhode Island DEM website.
