INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers open the 2024-25 season in Detroit against the Pistons. The Pacers beat the Pistons last season – despite their struggles with other teams in the lottery – but Detroit has veterans Tim Hardaway Jr. and Tobias Harris among its young core of Cade Cunningham, former Purdue star Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson and Jalen added Düren. Follow here to keep up with the Pacers tonight.

Myles Turner and Pascal Siakam cause some problems for the Pistons, but Cade Cunningham has been a bigger problem for the Pacers. He made 5 of his first 5 to start the quarter and had 10 of his 17 points.

Tim Hardaway Jr. hit two 3-pointers early that put the Pistons ahead by 12, but Myles Turner is already 4 of 4 from the floor and 3 of 3 from 3-point range in the quarter, cutting the deficit on 68-63. The Pacers are 5 of 6 entering the half while the Pistons are 4 of 6.

The Pacers fell behind by double digits before a jumper from Andrew Nembhard just before halftime pulled them back to within nine points. Still, the Pistons are in control, playing more aggressively and powerfully and going downhill more often.

At halftime, the Pacers are 18 of 42 from the floor, 4 of 16 from 3 and 9 of 10 at the line, scoring 0.95 points per possession. The Pistons are now 21 of 46 from the floor, 4 of 17 from 3 and 12 of 13 at the line. Tobias Harris has 13 points and Malik Beasley has 10. No one on the Pacers roster has reached double figures yet.

The Pistons have a 28-24 advantage in team play and a 13-6 advantage in second-chance points, although the rebounding numbers are even. The Pistons committed just seven turnovers while the Pacers had 11.

Tyrese Haliburton finally made it onto the court with a faded jump shot but has struggled so far, now is 1 of 8 with two points and just two assists. However, he has two blocks and two steals.

The Pacers are 4 of 14 as a team and 15 of 34 from the field. I really need to grind this out and the pistons will continue to work.

The Pacers’ second unit has had some success. Jarace Walker just hit a key 3-pointer and they are 5 of 8 from the field so far in the period. But the Pistons aren’t slowing down much with their backup players. They are 4 of 8 in the starting lineup and, again, play with a lot more vigor than we have been used to from Detroit in recent seasons.

The Pacers seemingly received bad news late in the first quarter. Center James Wiseman, who operated in the second unit with usual backup Isaiah Jackson, who was sidelined with a groin strain, was hampered by a non-contact ankle injury. He had to be helped off the floor and shortly afterwards he went to the locker room. He walked under his own power, but did so cautiously. Shortly after his departure, the Pacers announced that he would not return due to a left calf injury.

Wiseman, signed as a free agent by the Pistons this offseason, scored six points in less than five minutes before the injury.

The Pacers were 8 of 20 from the floor in the first quarter. the Pistons were 11 of 24. Detroit still seems to have the edge here in terms of intensity.

The Pacers responded to the difficult start with a quick rhythm and an 8-0 run. Aaron Nesmith scored five of the points, drilling a 3-pointer and knocking down a turnaround jumper to tie the game at 12 points. They’re still 4 of 11, but the Pistons are 4 of 12, so they seem to have at least made it through the camps on both ends.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle tried to make it clear that this will be a much different Pistons team than the one that has been the NBA’s worst over the past two seasons. The Pistons got this point in the first segment themselves.

The Pistons are 4-10 so far and the Pacers are 1-5. With a home crowd that’s much better than they normally see, they have a strong atmosphere, but it’s also pretty clear that JB Bickerstaff is their attitude has changed dramatically. This won’t be easy for Indiana.

The Pacers’ starting lineup is the same as it was at the end of last season. Pistons added the veterans they added in the offseason.

Pacers second-unit center Isaiah Jackson is out with a groin strain, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said in his pregame press conference. In his absence, the Pacers could use James Wiseman as a second-line center or play small and move Obi Toppin from power forward to second-unit center.

Rookie winger Johnny Furphy is available after missing all four pre-season games with an ankle injury, although he is unlikely to see significant playing time.

The Pistons are out wingers Ausar Thompson and Bobi Klintman.

The Pistons appeared to be strengthened in the preseason by new coach JB Bickerstaff, whose tenacious defense made the Cavaliers a tough opponent. Going in the top five of the NBA Draft has produced a lot of young talent over the past four years, and Bickerstaff is hoping to make his mark. The Pacers sleepwalked through the end of the preseason, so a fiery version of the Pistons could shock them. We expect Indiana to pull away at some point, but don’t be surprised if the Pistons take the lead.

ESPN’s matchup predictor gives the Pacers a 63% chance of winning.
