WATCH: VanderSloot, Erickson debate Idaho Proposition 1

IDAHO FALLS – Frank VanderSloot and Hyrum Erickson discussed Proposition 1 during a live event on EastIdahoNews.com Wednesday afternoon.

VanderSloot, the Melaleuca board chairman, opposes the ballot initiative, while Erickson, a Republican county executive from Madison County, supports it.

Why Hyrum Erickson says you should vote yes on Proposition 1

Why Frank VanderSloot says you should vote “no” on Proposition 1

Proposition 1 would eliminate party primaries in Idaho and create nonpartisan primaries for the top four parties. These would be open to all candidates and voters, regardless of party affiliation.

The proposal would also allow ranked-choice voting in general elections. If passed, patrons would vote for their favorite candidate and would have the opportunity to rank the remaining candidates in order of preference – second choice, third and fourth choice. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, the candidate who receives the fewest votes is eliminated. Your votes will be transferred to the voters’ next highest remaining active candidate. The process continues until there are two candidates left and the candidate with the most votes is chosen as the winner.

The debate was moderated by EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton. Watch the entire event in the video player above.
