Overall crime, including liquor law violations, sexual harassment cases and acts of violence against women, increased on Emerson College’s Boston campus in 2023, according to a recent security report that includes crime data at Emerson’s three campus locations over the last year includes.

The college is federally required to release one Annual Clery Compliance Report every October with detailed information on campus safety policies, crime statistics and a fire safety report. Emerson breaks down the annual report by campus: Boston, Los Angeles and Kasteel Well.

ECPD encourages everyone to express concern about crime and possible security issues.

“The College always encourages crime reporting, and the Clery crime log can be viewed at ECPD at any time, not just during the annual reporting of this information,” Rosemary Lavery, director of external strategic communications, said in a statement to The Beacon.

BOSTON

Emerson College Crimes Boston campus have steadily increased over the past three years, and 2023 has seen a drastic increase in alcohol law-related referrals.

Calendar year 2023 data revealed a total of 23 reports of crime on the Boston campus, both on campus spaces and on public property adjacent to campus, an increase from 14 reports in 2022 and 18 in 2021.

The Boston campus report “is not intended to represent all incidents reported,” Robert Casagrande, chief of the Emerson College Police Department, said in the report. The Clery Report includes all crimes reported to ECPD, Campus Safety, or other law enforcement agencies.

The total number of referrals on the Boston campus was significantly higher in 2023, with 366 cases reported, including liquor law violations, drug law violations and illegal firearm possession. There were a total of 219 referrals in 2022 and 145 in 2021, representing a more than 100% increase in reports over the past two years.

The vast majority of citations involve liquor law violations, including the sale, purchase, transportation, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages. 361 of the 366 reports violated alcohol laws and were reported in residence halls.

In 2023, there were two arrests on or in the vicinity of campus – one for a weapons violation and another for violations of the drug law in public spaces. This number has not changed compared to 2021 and 2022, which also saw two reported arrests on the Boston campus.

The total number of sexual offenses remained about the same as in previous years. There were two reported rapes in dormitory buildings and three cases of fondling, an increase from one rape in 2022, and two reports of fondling at a hotel in Tucson, Arizona, where Emerson’s baseball team was staying.

Crimes under the Violence Against Women Act showed an increase in domestic violence on the Boston campus — five in 2023, up from one incident in 2022 and two in 2021 — but a decrease in stalking. One incident was reported in 2023, down from the four in 2022 and one in 2021.

The data also revealed a report of arson (including attempted arson) at 150 Boylston Street – the residence hall building on Piano Row – making no arson reported at any building in the previous two years. The total monetary loss from the incident was $100.

There were no hate crimes reported on the Boston campus in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

LOS ANGELES

Emerson College’s second largest campus, Emerson Los Angeles, accommodates up to 200 students every semester. Although it is Emerson’s second largest campus, it is significantly fewer than the approximately 4,000 students on the Boston campus.

Compared to other Emerson campuses, crime rates on the Los Angeles campus are consistently low. It only reflected arson Clery Report 2023. The incident occurred on public property around the Los Angeles campus, not in an official Emerson building. Public property on the Los Angeles campus includes “thoroughways, streets, sidewalks, and parking facilities located within the campus or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the Emerson Los Angeles campus.”

No further crimes were documented from Emerson Los Angeles in 2023.

KASTEEL GOOD

Emerson College’s third campus, Kasteel Well in the Netherlands, saw an even smaller number of students last year up to 90 students I live there for three months every semester.

No crimes were recorded in 2022 and 2022 Clery Report 2023and only two liquor law violations were reported in 2021.
