Documents show son threatened to kill mother before both were killed in Roy fire

ROY, Utah – A Roy man previously called police and threatened to kill his mother Both died in a mobile home fire earlier this monthaccording to documents related to an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Janet J. Shaw and her 46-year-old son Johnathan P. Gunter both died in the Oct. 3 fire at the Monte Vista Mobile Home Park.

Roy police are currently investigating the fire for possible arson and homicide.

A search warrant application showed that when Roy police officers arrived at the home, they tried to rescue Shaw, 71, and Gunter through a back door, “but something was blocking the door from opening,” the document said .

Police eventually managed to pull the mother and son out of a rear window, but both later died from their injuries.

The warrant application states that Gunter called police earlier in the day and said “if they did not arrive on the scene soon, he would kill his mother.”

It is unknown what exactly was blocking the door that prevented officers from entering the home.

The results of the fire investigation are not yet available.
