Women’s golf breaks school record in Hawaii

Team ranking

KAPOLEI, Hawaii (EMUEagles.com) – Savannah de Bock

finished in the top 10 in singles for the fourth time this season, while five players posted career-low scores in 54 holes to help the Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team break the program’s low tournament score and the Eagles to provide a strong finish at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. The three-day tournament took place October 23-25 at Kapolei Golf Course in Kapolei, Hawaii. The Eagles finished 11th overall in the 15-team field on the 6,231-yard, par-72 course.

How it happened

Eastern continued to improve over the course of the three rounds, posting scores of 300, 290 and 289, scoring 15 overs, 879 and finishing 11th overall. Colorado State University (-23) and Kansas State University (-20) took the top two spots in the team standings, while Grand Canyon University and the University of California, Irvine tied for third at 9 under.

As a team, the Eagles broke the school record of 880 set on September 21-22, 2015 at the Cardinal Classic with a team score of 879. To achieve the record, the team scored 289 points in the third round, the fourth-lowest total in program history, while the 290 points scored in the second round were the fifth-lowest total. All told, those two frames marked just the second time this year that the Eagles posted two rounds of 299 or better in the same tournament, and the first since the season-opening Leadership and Golf Invitational tournament on Sept. 16 and 17 in Washington.

Individually, de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d’enghien, Belgium/Institut de l’Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) was once again the Eagles’ best player as she became the 53rd player in the NCAA to finish seventh with a score of 5-under 211 (72-71-68). This was the fourth consecutive event she has competed in this year where she finished in the top eight individually at the NCAA Championships. After playing at or under par all three rounds, de Bock finished with a score of 211, second best in program history Anna Watsonwho set the then school record at the Shirley Spork Invitational at EMU October 2-3, 2023. De Bock holds the school record after shooting a 204 at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic Sept. 23-25.

Two other Eagles landed in the top 50 Mariana Vega (Barranquilla, Colombia/Colegio Karl C. Parrish) He shot 3-for-219 (76-71-72) to earn 32nd place Riley Kim (Aldie, Virginia/Lightridge) Her 6-over 222 score (79-72-71) tied her for 42nd place. Amaya Melendez (Ann Arbor, Michigan/Pioneer) Tied for 71st at 15-over, 231 (74-79-78) during Julianna Go (San Juan, Philippines/St. Jude Catholic School/King) Tied for 75th at 16-over, 232 (78-76-78). Maddysun Beeching (Camberley, Surrey, England/Millfield School)who played as a singles player, took part in her first collegiate competition, worsening her scores in each round and finishing 90th with 27 overs (84-82-77=242).
