When it comes to high school football, there’s nothing bigger than Mater Dei meeting St. John Bosco in a Southern Section showdown on Friday night.

The annual high school football game of the year begins this week and the Monarchs and Braves are once again the undefeated top-ranked high school football teams in the country.

The Monarchs prepared for their showdown with St. John Bosco with a 41-17 road win over JSerra as Dash Beierly allowed three touchdowns and ran for another.

Mater Dei was the last laugh when it won the Open Division title last season, but they may come into this game with a little more motivation after St. John Bosco defeated them 28-0 in their regular season clash a year ago had switched off.

Freshman quarterback Koa Malau’ulu had a solid performance to help the Braves get past the Friars.

Malau’ulu was 14 of 20 for 185 yards and three touchdowns when recovering from the injury (and subsequent transfer to Kahuku in Hawaii) by Junior Matai Fuiava.

He’ll have his hands full this week facing the No. 1 team in the country.
