Maharashtra: 93% MLAs crorepatis, 60% with criminal cases against them – know composition of outgoing Assembly

Maharashtra Election 2024: As many as 60 percent (164) MLAs in the outgoing Maharashtra Assembly have filed criminal cases against themselves. At least 39 percent (106) MLAs have filed serious criminal cases against them.

Serious criminal cases include, but are not limited to, charges relating to murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and crimes against women.

These details were revealed in the analysis by election watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch after analyzing the criminal, financial and other background information of 272 out of 288 sitting MLAs in the outgoing Maharashtra Assembly.

Maharashtra’s 288 seats will vote in a single phase on November 20 to elect a new assembly.

The ADR analysis said at least 10 MLAs have reported cases related to attempt to murder while 12 MLAs have reported cases related to crimes against women.

At least 62 out of 103 MLAs from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 25 out of 40 MLAs from NCP (Ajit Pawar), 22 out of 38 MLAs from Shiv Sena (Shinde), 20 out of 37 MLAs from Congress, 9 out of 16 MLAs from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray), 6 out of 12 MLAs of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) and 9 of the 12 independent MLAs have registered criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits, the ADR analysis said.

Serious criminal cases

Among the MLAs, 38 were from the BJP, 14 from the NCP (Ajit Pawar), 18 from Shiv Sena (Shinde), 11 from Congress, 7 from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray), 3 from Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) and 7 independent MLAs have registered serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits, says the analysis.

The MVA, comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar faction), is fighting against the ruling Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, BJP and NCP’s Mahayuti alliance in the November 20 polls.

93% Crorepatis

Of the 272 sitting MLAs analysed, 252 (93 per cent) are crorepatis.

98 out of 103 MLAs of BJP, 36 out of 40 MLAs of NCP (Ajit Pawar), 35 MLAs of Shiv Sena (Shinde), 35 MLAs of Congress, 15 MLAs of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray), 11 MLAs of NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and 11 independent MLAs have declared assets worth more than 1 Crore.

At least 164 – 60 percent – MLAs in the outgoing Maharashtra Assembly have filed criminal cases against themselves.

Parag Shah, the BJP MLA from Ghatkopar East, is the richest MLA with declared assets 500 crore. Shah is followed by Mangalprabhat Lodha, the BJP MLA from Malabar Hill, who has declared assets valuable 441 Crores. Sanjay Chandrakant Jagtap, the Congress MLA based in Pune’s Purandar seat, is the third richest MLA in assets 245 Crores
