Section A – 22 points

Reading skills

I – Reading Comprehension through Invisible Passage

1. An invisible passage to assess understanding, interpretation, analysis and inference. Vocabulary assessment is also assessed through inference. The passage can be factual, descriptive, or literary.

2. An unseen, case-based factual passage using verbal/visual inputs such as statistical data, graphs, etc. to assess understanding, interpretation, analysis, inference and evaluation.

Note: The combined word limit for both passages is 700-750 words.

Multiple choice/objective type questions and short answer type questions (to be answered in 40-50 words) will be asked.

3. Note, up to 50 words. One of the two questions asked must be answered. (4 points: Format: 1 / Content: 2 / Accuracy of spelling and grammar: 1).

4. Formal/informal invitation and response, up to 50 words. One of the two questions asked must be answered. (4 points: Format: 1 / Content: 2 / Accuracy of spelling and grammar: 1).

5. Letters based on verbal/visual prompts to be answered in approximately 120-150 words. Types of letters include applications for a job with a resume or CV. Letters to the editor (suggestions or opinions on topics of public interest) . One of the two questions asked must be answered. (5 points: Format: 1 / Organization of ideas: 1 / Content: 2 / Accuracy of spelling and grammar: 1).

6. Write an article/report, descriptive and analytical in nature, based on oral submissions, to be answered in 120-150 words. One of the two questions asked must be answered. (5 points: Format: 1 / Organization of ideas: 1 / Content: 2 / Accuracy of spelling and grammar: 1).

Section C – 40 marks

Literature textbook and additional reading text

This section contains various assessment elements, including multiple-choice questions, objective-type questions, short-answer-type questions, and long-answer-type questions, to aid understanding, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and extrapolation to evaluate the text beyond.

7. An excerpt from two poems from the book “Flamingo” to assess understanding, interpretation, analysis, inference and appreciation.

8. One of two prose excerpts from the book Vistas to assess understanding, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and appreciation.

9. A prose excerpt of two from the book Flamingo to assess understanding, interpretation, analysis, conclusion and evaluation.

10. Short answer type questions (from prose and poetry from the book “Flamingo”), to be answered in 40-50 words each. Questions should elicit inferential answers through critical thinking. Five of the six questions asked must be answered.

11. “Short answer” type questions from prose (Vistas), to be answered in 40-50 words each. Questions should elicit inferential answers through critical thinking. Two out of three questions must be answered.

12. A long answer type question from prose/poetry (Flamingo) to be answered in 120-150 words. Questions may be based on an incident, theme, passage, excerpt, or event as reference points to assess extrapolation beyond the entire text. The question will elicit an analytical and evaluative response from the student. One of two questions must be answered.

13. A long answer type question based on the chapters from the book Vistas, to be answered in 120-150 words to assess global understanding and extrapolation beyond the text. Questions designed to provide analytical and evaluative answers using incidents, events and themes as reference points. One of two questions must be answered.
