Record warm weather ahead of a weak cold front

Record and near-record temperatures return Thursday afternoon. A cold front will cause a slight drop in temperatures on Friday before it warms up again over the weekend.

Temperatures continue their warming trend across New Mexico today, rising as much as 5° to 10° warmer than Tuesday afternoon. Dry air continues to ensure clear skies across the state today. Temperatures will cool down quickly overnight, with cool temperatures starting on Thursday, but record temperatures and maximum temperatures close to record highs are expected in the afternoon. Albuquerque will even climb into the 80s, southern New Mexico even into the 90s. Northern parts of the state may also experience breezy winds Thursday afternoon.

A weak cold front will move through New Mexico from the northeast Thursday evening. This front will bring high temperatures above 10°C across eastern New Mexico on Friday afternoon, while the western half of the state remains essentially untouched. Even if the front passes through, we stay dry. Temperatures will begin a warming trend again on Saturday, with more record and near-record high temperatures expected across parts of the state on Sunday and Monday.

A storm system is approaching New Mexico on Monday, bringing breezy afternoon winds across the state. The strongest winds will arrive Tuesday afternoon, where we may see widespread gusts of 35 to 50 miles per hour. A cold front will move across New Mexico next Tuesday evening, bringing with it a sharp drop in temperatures through next Wednesday. The wind will ease next Wednesday, but we can expect some of the coldest air so far this season. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it brings much moisture. Rain and heavy mountain snow are expected in southwestern Colorado, but most of New Mexico will remain dry. Scattered showers and light mountain snow may occur in northern New Mexico.
