A man who was shot at a construction site in Phoenix is speaking out for the first time

PHOENIX – Jamal Avery, a construction worker who was shot while repairing a fence in Phoenix, spoke to ABC15 on Wednesday about his recovery.

Avery’s wife and mother spoke to ABC15 in September after the shooting that seriously injured the 19-year-old and killed 48-year-old Alan Whitworth.

On Sept. 1, Phoenix police said Whitworth was working with Avery at construction near 40th Street and Thomas Road. ABC15 was told this morning that there was some sort of argument. Both were shot and officials said the shooter fled the scene.

His family told ABC15 that the young father was transferred to a rehabilitation facility after being released from the hospital.

Phoenix police searched for a suspect for two weeks and finally arrested Marquea Cato.

Cato was charged with several counts, including first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held in custody on $2 million bail.

Avery’s family has launched an online fundraiser to help with medical expenses.
