ATP Basel best bets including Wawrinka vs. Shelton

ATP 500 Basel 1/8 final

Shapovalov – Bautista-Agut: October 24, 2024 4:30 p.m. CEST
H2H: 2-0

Denis Shapovalov has won four of his last five games. Two weeks ago in Shanghai, Denis lost his second-round match against Shelton in straight sets. Here in Basel, Denis won his opening match against Shang in straight sets. The Canadian served great throughout the match, bidding and saving only one break point. Denis is aiming for a solid result this week to cement his top 100 status. In his comeback season, Shapovalov only managed one quarterfinal result.

Roberto Bautista-Agut has won six games in a row. Last week in Antwerp, Roberto secured his first title since 2022. In the final, the Spaniard defeated Lehecka in straight sets and showed glimpses of his best days. It was his biggest result of the season. Here in Basel, Roberto won his opening game against Casper Ruud in three close sets. It was another solid performance from the Spaniard, who enjoys playing on the indoor courts. Last year in Basel, Agut lost his opening game against Van de Zandschulp in three close sets.

The best bet

According to the bookmakers, it should be a 50:50 match. We believe Shapovalov will be the more rested player in this match. Roberto spent a lot of time on the pitch last week in Antwerp and also here in his opening game. We believe Agut will be exhausted and lose this game.

Apart from that, Shapovalov’s win is a value bet.

Wawrinka – Shelton: October 24, 2024 4:00 p.m. CEST
H2H: first meeting

Stanislas Wawrinka has won four of his last five games. Last week in Stockholm Stan reached the semi-finals where he lost in straight sets to Tommy Paul. That was also his biggest result of the season. Here in Basel, Wawrinka won his opening match against Mannarino in three close sets after spending two hours on court. This was by far the worst season for Stan the Man. He is currently outside the top 150 rankings. Wawrinka is 39 years old and his freedom of movement on the pitch is limited. Last year in Basel, Stanislas lost his opening match against Shevchenko in straight sets.

Ben Shelton has won three of his last five games. Two weeks ago, Shelton reached the round of 16 in Shanghai when, as predicted, he lost to Sinner in close sets. Here in Basel, Ben had a positive draw in the first round. Ben defeated Etcheverry in straight sets. Shelton served great as always and only offered one break point. This time last year, Shelton was playing in Vienna, where he lost in the first round of the tournament.

The best bet

According to the bookies, Shelton is the favorite in this match and we agree. Stanislas has played a lot of games lately and looked exhausted in the deciding set against Mannarino yesterday. On the other hand, Shelton has a perfect game for this fast surface, so we expect him to win this game easily.

Apart from that, Shelton’s win in straight sets is a value bet.
