Raspberry Pi releases more powerful AI HAT+

Raspberry Pi is introducing another new product this week, a continuation of its AI-centric products for the Raspberry Pi 5. Available in two versions, a TOPS with 13 and 26 tera operations per second, the Raspberry Pi AI HAT+ continues its Partnership with fort Hailo.

Fresh from the news that Raspberry Pi now has its Private label SSDs, Micro SD cards and a bumper for the Raspberry Pi 5. Raspberry Pi has also announced its third AI-centric product in the form of the Raspberry Pi AI HAT+.

You might think this sounds familiar, and you’re partly right. It looks very similar to the one previously published Raspberry Pi AI Kit A Hailo-8 inference accelerator for neural networks is also used. With the AI Kit+, however, the accelerator is integrated into the board and not via an M.2 interface. However, it still uses the PCIe interface and runs at Gen 3 speeds. Similar to the Raspberry Pi SSD, which also runs at PCIe Gen 3, suggesting that Raspberry Pi could move the default PCIe speed from Gen 2 to 3 in a software update (if it hasn’t already done so).

The new Raspberry Pi AI Kit+ is available in two versions. The 26 TOPS variant of a Hailo-8 and a 13 TOPS Hailo 8L version that matches the performance of the Raspberry Pi AI Kit. Raspberry Pi also recently released the Raspberry Pi AI Camera Kit, which does not use the Hailo accelerator. Instead, the camera kit uses a Sony IMX500 “Intelligent Vision Sensor,” which is not directly comparable to Hailo boards. However, we are working on a benchmark test that will allow us to compare the performance of all three devices.

The 26 TOPS variant is designed to handle larger networks and runs them faster than other Raspberry Pi accelerators. The 26 TOPs variant can also operate multiple networks at the same time, which we will test with our 26 TOPs test model.

If you are using the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS, it automatically detects the built-in Hailo accelerator and makes it available for use in AI applications such as rpicam-apps and Picamera2.

The Raspberry Pi AI HAT+ comes with 16mm standoffs (which provide space for the Active Cooler), a stacking header, and a flat flex cable to connect to the Raspberry Pi 5’s PCIe port. We have one on the desk and will test it and compare it to the other Raspberry Pi AI products in a full review.
