After a multi-year hiatus, the Burbank Fire Department’s Youth Fire Camp made a triumphant return this past weekend, offering local youth ages 14 to 18 a unique opportunity to explore a career in firefighting.

Battalion Chief Travont White, who also serves as the department’s training director, organized the event, held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing the children with a dynamic and interactive training experience.

“The purpose of the youth camp was to give back to the community and connect with local students interested in a career in the fire department,” said Battalion Chief and Firefighter Jim Moye. “Many students don’t know how to pursue a career as a firefighter, and events like this can help them explore their options.”

Each student was given a red academy shirt to wear, divided into groups and explored four categories of fire service. The stations included engine manufacturer operations that focused on laying hose lines and securing water supplies. The students equipped themselves with jackets and helmets and took on the role of a firefighter on duty.

The second category included trucking company operations focused on ladders and recovery tools. Students learned how to properly hold and carry a ladder and how to safely climb a building.

Next was the EMS section, which covered initial patient care and assessments such as blood pressure monitoring and hand-only CPR. Finally, special rope rescue techniques were used in the “Technical Rescue” module.

Throughout the camp, students remained actively engaged, gaining not only technical skills but also insight into the teamwork and physical demands required in firefighting. The interactive format ensured they were constantly learning, practicing and problem-solving – key aspects of a firefighter’s daily work.

The youth fire brigade camp was considered a great success by both the organizers and the participants. The Burbank Fire Department already plans to host additional academies in the future and act as a springboard for students considering a rewarding and challenging career in the fire service.
