National Fire Marshal Warns About Halloween Safety – ButlerRadio.com

As Halloween approaches, the National Fire Protection Association reminds everyone to stay safe.

Between 2018 and 2022, there were an average of 835 house fires that started with decorations. Almost half of these fires were due to decorations being near heat, while a third of them were due to being near candles.

To ensure you have a safe holiday season, you can follow these simple tips from the NFPA:

  • Keep dry decorations such as corn stalks, crepe paper and dried flowers away from heat sources
  • Keep candles in well-trafficked areas and keep them away from trick and treaters
  • Use glow sticks or electric candles for jack-o-lanterns. If you use a candle, keep the pumpkin away from other decorations.
  • Don’t wear costumes that run behind you and whose fabric is easy to light
  • Check your fire alarms and make sure there are no decorations blocking the way at the exits.
