14-year-old boy charged in Little Haiti shooting, father of three killed and another man hospitalized

MIAMI – A teenager has been arrested and is now facing charges in connection with a murder Shooting in Little Haiti A father of three was killed and another father was hospitalized two weeks ago, police said.

On Wednesday, Miami City Police announced they had arrested the 14-year-old and charged him with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder as a juvenile. CBS News Miami is not revealing his name or showing his face because he is a minor.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Oct. 11, Miami police officers were called to a ShotSpotter alert near 131 NE 77th St., where they found two men who had been shot multiple times.

One of those men, 45-year-old Robin Fernandez, died at the scene. The other, 31-year-old David Pichinte, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Pichinte was initially on life support and his wife, Liz Ortiz, told CBS News Miami that one of his organs had suffered significant damage. She said she didn’t understand why someone opened fire on Pichinte, who is the father of a girl and two boys.

Fernandez was shot six times.

Miami police praised their detectives for their work.

They said surveillance tape showed the suspect leaving his home at 7741 NW Second Court, going to the crime scene outside an apartment building at 131 NE 77th St. and then returning home. The distance is four blocks and the walk is about 5 minutes.

Surveillance video captured part of the attack. You hear shots and see people running. Police and witnesses said the teen showed up outside the building and began asking for a drink. He then allegedly pulled out a gun, demanded money and began stalking the victims.

Witnesses said Pinchinte tried to grab the gun from the attacker but fell and was shot twice.

On Tuesday evening, Williams was arrested at his home and taken to Miami police headquarters for questioning. Williams was then interviewed by police without legal representation after being read his rights, arrest documents say. After the interview he was arrested and charged with murder.

He appeared before District Court Judge Michelle Barakat at the Children’s Court Building on Wednesday afternoon. She found probable cause for the charges and ordered him to stay away from the surviving victim.

He is being held in a secure area at the Miami Dade Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

The teen agreed to the judge’s order. The teen’s aunt and uncle also appeared in court but said they did not want to speak.

Police say he is also connected to another case involving a strongarm robbery.

Prosecutors said they would need 21 days to decide whether he should be charged as an adult.
