Parliamentary candidate Jovan Jackson advocates for second chances and criminal justice reform

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Jovan Jackson, a Democrat running for Assembly District 6, joined the 8 News Now Daily Voting Guide to talk about his candidacy and journey.

Jackson spoke openly about his past struggles and the importance of rehabilitation.

“In my past I was a young man, young, successful. I was a bit naive, arrogant and addicted to drug abuse. And with that, I literally lost my mind,” Jackson said, adding that he got to the point where he wanted to find help.

Jackson shared that his involvement in crime stemmed from a period of mental health issues and substance abuse. He recounted a pivotal moment when he and his brother, a military veteran, were both struggling with their mental health.

“I was hopeless. I didn’t care about my life and I didn’t care about the outcome,” Jackson said, explaining that even though he backed out of a robbery at the last minute, he was still charged with conspiracy and sentenced to two years in prison.

Asked if his time in prison helped him, Jackson replied: “Absolutely. I was able to get the treatment I needed. I was able to find the solitude I needed.” He also emphasized the need for mental health support.

“I think when people are going through a mental health crisis, a lot of times they literally just need a place to isolate themselves.”

Jackson said his platform includes strong support for restoring voting rights to felons.

“I believe that everyone should have a second chance. I don’t believe incarceration should be a life sentence.”

Jackson emphasized the importance of education as a top priority.

“Children are our future. There needs to be more investment in the school district, right down to school lunch.”

Looking back on his personal journey, Jackson said he believes everyone should have the opportunity to lead their community, adding that he believes there has been over-policing and over-incarceration in Assembly District 6.

“There are a lot of people who are offenders, who are leaders, who are preachers,” he said.
