Today is a cherished and valuable anniversary of nations’ efforts to end conflict, save generations from the scourge of war, and work to build a safer, more stable and more developed world.

United Nations Day reminds us of the importance of peace and stability for the well-being of humanity. We will not forget those who served in this organization and those who made great sacrifices to support peace and create security and prosperity.

The United Nations is committed to helping people defuse conflict and in times of peace to promote sustainable peace, justice and development. Here is what we are doing in Iraq too: We are serving all sectors of society through sustainable development, support and humanitarian assistance, and through efforts to promote human rights, just as we have done with the Iraqi people in the past conflict.

As a founding member of the United Nations, Iraq plays an important role in upholding the values, principles and rights enshrined in the UN Charter to which all 193 member states have committed themselves.

In his UN Day message, Secretary-General António Guterres summarizes who we are and what we do. He says: “The United Nations was built by the world for the world. Since 1945, it has been the place where countries come together to find global solutions to global problems.”

We all belong to this United Nations. We are proud of this day and will not forget the memory of all those who have worked to uphold the name and values of the United Nations and to defend the security and fundamental rights of all humanity.

Happy United Nations Day.
