Fantasy Football Starting/Sitting Tips: Safe and Risky Tips (Week 8)

The crucial season is just around the corner. Every week as the season progresses, the pressure that comes with your imaginative starting position decisions increases. Ahead of Week 8, when all 32 teams play, these are the riskiest and safest starts.

Advice on fantasy football starting/sitting lineups

Let’s take a look at some risky and safe starts for Week 8 of the fantasy football season.

Week 8 Risky Fantasy Football begins

Kyler Murray (QB – ARI) @ Dolphins

The start of the season brought a lot of promise for this refreshed Cardinals offense, as Marvin Harrison Jr. might be able to get Kyler Murray back to the high level of his rookie contract and Trey McBride could take another step forward. Instead, we saw Murray start games incredibly hot and then tail off sharply, with eight passing touchdowns in the first half and a single one in the second half.

The Dolphins have been excellent at capitalizing on the fantasy football potential of games so far, allowing the fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks and not having a signal-caller finish higher than QB19 against them, despite facing Josh Allen, Geno Smith and Anthony, among others Richardson competed. The Dolphins play single-high coverage 55% of the time – a coverage that Murray has struggled with and ranks 25th in Completion Rate Over Expected (CPOE), according to Fantasy Points. If Tua Tagovailoa returns, it could be a more competitive game for the Cardinals, but that might not play a role in Murray’s fate.

Chris Olave (WR – NO) @ Chargers

We’ve come a long way from the fun days of the first two weeks, when the Saints looked like one of the league’s more forward-thinking and entertaining offenses. Since then, injuries have plagued the offense, taking a subpar offensive line to even greater heights and hurting the Saints at almost every level. Chris Olave has had a rocky start to the season with just one top-20 performance so far as the offense was instead taken over by Rashid Shaheed.

With Shaheed out for the season, Olave has a chance to turn that around if he can clear the concussion protocol. However, it’s not like Olave returns to a perfect situation with Spencer Rattler at quarterback and the Chargers at the helm. The Chargers rank eighth in FTN’s pass defense DVOA metric and have allowed the third-fewest fantasy points to wide receivers, giving up a single top-20 ranking in six games.

Garrett Wilson (WR – NYJ) @ Patriots

The Patriots haven’t been a great defense this year, but they’ve managed to drain plays often enough that they’re killing fantasy football highs. Christian Gonzalez is one of the better shadow corners in the league. When these two teams met in Week 3, Garrett Wilson suffered a WR29 fantasy finish.

Wilson faces additional scoring competition from Davante Adams, who scored nine goals in his Gang Green debut and, unlike Wilson, did not directly contribute to two turnovers. Wilson also faces increasing competition for touches from Breece Hall, whose usage has increased since Robert Saleh was fired. Wilson will likely be one of the most hit-or-miss players in the league for the rest of the year.

Diontae Johnson (WR – CAR) @ Broncos

Everything seemed to be going perfectly for Diontae Johnson after Bryce Young was benched and Andy Dalton entered the lineup. Johnson was a top-10 fantasy wide receiver in back-to-back weeks, scoring a whopping 27 times, but as the games got closer and closer, the Panthers were stymied by mediocre pass defenses.

Johnson has had just one top-50 finish since then (WR12 in Week 6). The Broncos should let Patrick Surtain return to their starting lineup to bolster a pass defense that ranks fourth in DVOA and has given up the second-fewest fantasy points to wide receivers.

Week 8 Safe Fantasy Football begins

Brian Robinson Jr. (RB – WAS) vs. Bears

The Commanders outscored the Panthers in convincing fashion, even without Jayden Daniels for most of the game. Although the Bears are not such a soft opponent, we can be confident that Brian Robinson Jr. will be back in the starting lineup this week. Robinson Jr. had eight touches in the first half compared to Austin Ekeler’s four, while the game was still somewhat within reach for the Panthers.

Robinson Jr. has scored six touchdowns in six games and has been a top-24 running back in every single one of those games. The Bears lead the league in run funnel rate, which is determined by comparing the quality of their pass defense to their run defense. The Bears’ pass defense ranks second in DVOA, while their run defense ranks 24th. It’s much easier to run away than to pass it on.

Jordan Mason (RB – SF) vs. Cowboys

The struggling Niners play a Cowboys team that is hoping to find itself for the second straight season after its bye week. Their big hope will rest on whether they’ve managed to get their pathetic run defense under control. The Cowboys have allowed the second-most rushing touchdowns (10) and the sixth-most rushing yards per game (143.2) this year, as well as the fourth-most running back fantasy points.

With Brandon Aiyuk suffering from a torn ACL and ACL and Deebo Samuel dealing with pneumonia symptoms that briefly hospitalized him, this feels like another week for Jordan Mason in which he will see a large amount of touches, despite only seeing 13.6 in the last three weeks. Mason started the season in great shape, scoring touchdowns in three of the first four games, but he hasn’t found the end zone since. With the matchup and situation trending in Mason’s favor, don’t be surprised if he finds his way back into the end zone in Week 8.

Drake London (WR – ATL) @ Buccaneers

Drake London’s solid performance in Week 7 could have been even better had a potential touchdown not been missed, but as it was, London still managed to score a touchdown and 18.3 PPR points. London is averaging 19.3 points per game, excluding Week 1, where Kirk Cousins looked incredibly rusty. He scored one fewer touchdown in seven games than in the previous two seasons combined.

The Bucs allow the sixth-most fantasy points to wide receivers and were consistently defeated by Rashod Bateman in Week 7. They have allowed three top-three wide receiver finishes in seven games. London has firmly established himself as the Falcons’ top option and is on the verge of becoming a truly elite wide receiver.

David Njoku vs. Ravens

A few things about the Cleveland Browns feel particularly solid right now, as it was announced on Wednesday that they would not only have a new starting quarterback for the game against the Ravens in Jameis Winston, but also a new offensive lineman. Caller also in Ken Dorsey. A year ago, Dorsey was heavily vilified and left Buffalo, but there are many people who believe in his playing ability. Whether he is better than Kevin Stefanski remains to be seen.

In the Browns’ first game without Amari Cooper, David Njoku saw a massive 14 targets and caught 10 for 76 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals. The Ravens have allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to tight ends and have posted five top-12 performances in seven games. Njoku could be inconsistent with Winston at quarterback, but the volume should support him for the most part.
