Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi was released from prison on Thursday after being imprisoned in Pakistan’s Adiala Prison for nearly nine months.

The development comes a day after Bibi was granted bail in the Toshakhana case in which her husband is still behind bars.

In the days before the February election, Bibi was convicted along with opposition leader Khan of bribery and illegal marriage charges in what he said was a campaign to keep him out of the vote.

She was arrested in January after an accountability court in Islamabad sentenced her and Pakistan’s former prime minister to 14 years in prison for the bribery.

“Was kept in prison to put pressure on Khan”

Announcing the release of Bushra Bibi from prison, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Gohar Ali Khan said, “She was kept in prison to put pressure on Imran Khan. “I warmly congratulate all PTI supporters on the release of Bushra Bibi and we thank God.”

PTI leader Ali Khan said that after her release, Bibi returned home to the upscale Bani Gala district on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad.

“The cases brought against them were not only false and unjust but also petty and morally questionable,” PTI supporter Aqsa Qasim, who was waiting outside the residence, told AFP.

“It has been a long time since we received good news, but today we are here to greet our leader’s wife, who was wrongfully imprisoned.”
