Cuban-American support for Trump is at record levels, poll shows

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida. — A record number of Cuban-American voters in Miami-Dade County said they voted for former President Donald Trump in November, according to a survey released Wednesday by Florida International University.

The FIU Cuba poll found that 68 percent of the group’s voters would cast their ballot for Trump.

For the 2024 survey, 1,001 Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade County were surveyed by telephone between September 25 and October 9.

The poll is the longest-running poll of Cuban Americans in the country and has been tracking the community since 1991. The 2016 poll showed 35% approval for Trump, while the 2020 poll was at 59%. The approval rating in 2024 is also higher than the actual Cuban-American vote for Trump in the last two presidential elections.

“It appears that the Trump train is still picking up passengers on Calle Ocho,” said Guillermo Grenier, lead investigator of the Cuba survey and professor of sociology in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs, which is co-sponsoring the survey with FIU’s Cuban Research Institute. “With Cuban Americans born outside of Cuba being an exception, the Cuban American community remains loyal to the Republican Party and its version of Trump.”

South Floridians have been heading to the polls since early voting began on Monday, October 21st.

As of Tuesday evening, more than 200,000 people in Miami-Dade had voted in person and by mail, while in Broward more than 150,000 people had cast their ballots.

According to the poll, 23 percent of respondents said they intend to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. Five percent remained undecided.
