Honda has initiated its second major vehicle recall this month, this time covering more than 700,000 vehicles that could be experiencing a fuel leak due to a ruptured pump.

Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced last week the recall of certain Honda Accord, Civic and Hybrid models, a total of 720,810 potentially affected cars.

According to the notice, faulty production of high-pressure fuel pumps resulted in cracks, which can worsen when the pump is running. This could lead to fuel leaks and lead to an increased risk of injury, NHTSA warned.

This recall follows another recall issued by Honda in early October for 1.7 million cars due to problems with the steering wheel.

Fuel may leak from the pump

According to recall information submitted by Honda to NHTSA, the high-pressure fuel pump in affected vehicles could rupture and leak fuel.

The problem was caused by improper production of high-pressure fuel pumps, Honda said. This can cause a crack to form in the core part of the fuel pump, leading to a leak. A fuel leak near an ignition source increases the risk of fire, accident and/or injury.

In some cases, the smell of gas has been reported while driving or idling the vehicles.
