NEW DELHI, Oct 24 (PTI) India’s ousted High Commissioner Sanjay Verma describes Canada’s behavior as “hell” and says India has been betrayed and treated extremely unprofessionally by a country that is supposed to be a friendly democracy.
In an unexpected downturn in relations, Verma was declared a “person of interest” by Canada last week as part of its investigation into the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen declared a Khalistani terrorist by India. Before Canada could take further action, New Delhi recalled Verma and five other diplomats. which were also named similarly.
“This is the pit. This is the most unprofessional approach to a bilateral relationship. In the hands of a diplomat, diplomatic tools are available. These tools could have been used” instead of trying to question a country’s top envoy and other diplomats, Verma said in an interview recorded with PTI Video on Wednesday, his first after returning to India.
Verma spoke on a wide range of topics at the PTI studios in New Delhi, discussing the emergence of the Khalistani movement in Canada, the support it received from local politicians for election gains, and the kind of criminal activities that the Khalistanis carried out in the Perform correct order to increase their number.
“A child who cries the most is fed first by the mother. Even if there are only a handful of children, they scream the most and get the most attention from Canadian political supporters,” he said.
Verma said there were only around 10,000 hardline Khalistanis and supporters numbered around 1 lakh out of a Sikh population of around 8 lakhs.
“To get support, they intimidate ordinary Sikhs there, including with threats like ‘We know where your daughter is studying,'” Verma said.
“The Khalistanis have made Khalistan a business in Canada. In the name of Khalistan, they are doing human trafficking, drug trafficking, arms smuggling and everything. They earn a lot of money from this and also through Gurudwaras and use a part of it for all nefarious jobs,” he said.
