Storylines

USWNT: The last time the world saw the USWNT, they were standing at the top of the podium with gold medals hanging around their necks. Hayes had only played four games leading up to the Olympics, and now, 10 games later, she and the team are on a winning streak. There are 18 players available from the Olympic squad, while a number of gold medalists are missing due to ongoing injuries. Forward Trinity Rodman is out of camp with a back injury and Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson are available as two parts of the Triple Espresso attack.

Hayes has been vocal about the early stages of planning for the 2027-28 cycle, and that includes expanding the player pool. She plans to use the entire roster throughout the window and with six players in this camp without senior squad action, there are strong signs that multiple debuts are possible.

Planned XI: Campbell; Malonson, Sonnet, Girma, Fox; Coffey, Horan, Sanchez; Ryan, Smith, Swanson.

Iceland: The Stelpurnar okkar (Our girls are winless in their last 15 meetings against the USWNT, with 13 losses and two draws. They currently sit 13th overall in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking and have just qualified for the 2025 UEFA Women’s European Championship – a fifth successive success for the national team. Iceland coach Thorsteinn Halldórsson has named 23 players for October’s friendly against the USA, with most of the players from the European Championship qualifying team. Striker Sveindís Jónsdóttir will be a frequent defender, as the 23-year-old is the squad’s top scorer with 12 goals in 40 international appearances.

forecast

The first games in the international mix can initially stagnate. Add in some rotation and player management and perhaps this is tighter than some expect. Choose: USWNT 1, Iceland 0
