'Never my favorite': Alison Sweeney talks about filming typical Christmas movies in July and the 'hardest' part of filming in the hot heat

You can’t fight the heat because no matter where you are in the United States in the summer, it’s hot. This isn’t really a problem, but it is a challenge at work Hallmark’s Upcoming Christmas Movies and you have to pretend it’s cold during a heatwave. As the channel kicks off its annual holiday movie marathon TV program 2024I spoke to Alison Sweeney about what it’s like to film these projects when it’s hot outside and she told me why it’s “never.” [her] Favorite.”

Over at Hallmark Mystery, Alison Sweeney’s Christmas movie This time every year The premiere is scheduled for October 24th, two months before Christmas. So of course they had to shoot the project very early. The film is about a broken couple who are forced to get back together over the holidays and as you can imagine, romance ensues. Winter festivals also take place. However, filming in mid-July comes with its challenges and isn’t particularly fun, as Sweeney told me during an interview for CinemaBlend:

This film [has] took several years. I have to admit, we really wanted this film and I had planned for this film to be shot in the winter for about three years. And then, with all the things that happened last year, it just wasn’t going to happen. And so, of course, I inevitably ended up filming Christmas in July, a Christmas in July-style situation that was never my favorite. But I think we did it.

Well, they made it work. This time every year The tone may be darker than a typical Hallmark movie, but don’t let that fool you. The Hallmark Christmas spirit is also very present.

Although they survived the winter in the summer, it was a challenge, especially when it came to the wardrobe they had to wear. After explaining that I would have a hard time wearing a sweater in 30 degrees Celsius, Sweeney confirmed that this was indeed the case, which can make filming challenging. She said:

I love Christmas. This meant I could be in the Christmas spirit all year round. The hardest thing is pretending to be cold. You wear these jackets and, you know, a scarf and a hat, and you feel the sweat dripping down your neck… that’s the hardest thing. But like I said, this is where the magic of film comes into play. And hopefully we’ve managed to help people forget that.

Even wearing a light sweatshirt can be tiring in the summer heat. So, put one on Sweater during a heat wave like Candace Cameron Bure did a few years ago and Sweeney did this summer is not ideal. However, they do it anyway to ensure Hallmark can deliver its epic selection of Christmas movies, and they’ve become pros at it.

For example, Paul Greene explained that although it was “sultry.” When they filmed their project, “the illusion of a snowy Christmas was beautifully maintained,” making it easier to pretend it was winter while sweating in their sweaters.

Given that the actors are pros at pretending it’s winter and resources to help offset the heat, it seems like Hallmark has figured out how to film Christmas in the summer. No matter how you shoot it, shooting scenes in a sweater and pretending to be cold when it’s actually 90 degrees outside is never ideal, and it’s pretty sweaty, Sweeney told me. However, that doesn’t stop them and despite the challenges, they still capture the Christmas spirit that we always look forward to as the countdown to Christmas begins.
