Sergeant. Sarah Roque, a 23-year-old woman from Ligonier, was absent during a morning formation on Monday and a “pay attention” was issued. That night her body was found in a dumpster.

While the cause and manner of Roque’s death remains unknown, her death is currently being investigated as a homicide.

Officials at the U.S. Army base in Missouri say there is no immediate threat to people on the base or in the nearby community. The individual involved is not currently in custody and everyone associated with the incident is being secured for their safety.

Fort Leonard Wood’s commanding general, Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, said during a news conference Thursday that the base was devastated by the loss and described Roque as “tough and proud.”

“As a commander and leader, this is a tragedy,” Beck said Thursday.

Sergeant. Roque was a bridge crew member serving as a mine dog handler with the K9 Detachment assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion. She enlisted in 2020 and completed basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood.

During her time in the Army, Roque was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

“Sergeant Roque was a daughter, sister, friend and soldier who chose to serve our country courageously and honorably,” Beck said in a statement announcing the soldier’s death. “Her death has left a huge void in our team, and while there are no words to ease the pain, we continue to provide care, resources and support to those affected during this difficult time.”
