Men’s tennis will compete at the BCC Invitational this weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 24, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men’s tennis team will begin its fourth tournament of the fall season this weekend with the BCC Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Lions, hosted by Samford, will compete in singles and doubles from Friday, October 25th to Sunday, October 27th. UNA faces a field that includes in-state rivals Samford, UAB and South Alabama, as well as out-of-state rivals Belmont, Tulane and Louisiana.

North Alabama returns to the court after recently participating in the ITA Southern Regional tournament, where the Lions played players from programs in the Southern Region. UNA had a solid performance on LSU’s campus, finishing the tournament with 13 wins.

UNA will face some previous opponents again this weekend, as UNA faced both the Bulldogs and Blazers at the Samford Invite and posted a combined 17 singles and doubles wins from September 13-15. The Lions also had individual matches against players from both schools as well as South Alabama and Tulane at last week’s ITA tournament.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS

SAMFORD: The Bulldogs finished the spring of 2024 with a 15-8 overall record and a 6-1 record in the Southern Conference. They lost 4-2 to eventual champion East Tennessee State in the SoCon Tournament final.

UAB: The Blazers finished the 2024 spring season with a 12-11 regular season record and a 1-5 record in the American Athletic Conference. UAB made it to the AAC tournament after the season, but lost to South Florida in the first round.

SOUTH ALABAMA: The Jaguars won nine games in the spring 2024 season to reach the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament. South Alabama lost a close battle in the opening round, falling to Lafayette 4-3.

BELMONT: The Bruins posted a record of 11-10 and 5-0 in the Horizon League in the spring of 2024. They made it to the second round of the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Championships, defeating Tennessee Tech in the opening round. Belmont fell to Cleveland State in the subsequent second round.

TULANE: The Green Wave won nine games in the spring 2024 season, followed by two wins and a semifinal appearance in the AAC tournament. They defeated UTSA and SMU by 4-2 victories before falling to Charlotte.

LOUISIANA: The Cajuns had a 12-win season in the spring of 2024, losing to Georgia Southern in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship. With a win over South Alabama in the opening round, LU earned its first conference tournament win in nine seasons.
